After 21 years of marriage, my wifewanted me to take another woman out todinner and a movie. She said, "I love you, butknow this other woman loves you and wouldlove to spend some time with you."
The other woman my wife referred to wasmy mother, having been a widow for 19 years,but being busy made it possible for me to visither occasionally.
That night I called to invite her to go outfor dinner and a movie.
"What"s wrong? Are you well?" she asked.My mother is the type of woman who suspectsa late night call or a surprise invitation is a signof bad news.
"I think that it would be pleasant to spendsome time with you," I responded, "just the twoof us."
She thought about it for a moment, saying,"I would like that very much."
As I drove over to pick her up that Fridayafter work, I was a bit nervous. When I arrivedat her house, I noticed she, too, seemed to benervous. She waited in the door with her coaton. She had curled her hair and was wearingthe dress she had worn to celebrate her lastwedding anniversary.
She smiled just like an angel. "I told myfriends I was going to go out with my son, andthey were impressed. They can"t wait to hearabout our meeting," she said, getting into the car.
We went to a nice restaurant. My mothertook my arm as if she were the First Lady. Afterwe sat down, my mother said happily, "It waswho used to have to read the menu whenyou were small. lt"s time that you returned thefavor." I responded. During the dinner, we hada wonderful conversation, talking about recentevents of each other"s life. We talked so muchthat we missed the movie. As we arrived at herhouse, she said, "Next time, let me invite youto go out." I agreed.
"How was your dinner date?" asked mywife when I got home.
"Very nice, much more than I could haveimagined," I answered.
A few days later, my mother died of amassive heart attack. It happened so suddenlythat I didn"t have a chance to do anything forher. Some time later, I received an envelopewith a receipt from the restaurant Mother and Ihad dined, reading, "I paid this bill in advance. am not sure I can be there. I paid for twoplates. You will never know what that nightmeant for me. I love you, son."
At that moment, I understood theimportance of "I LOVE YOU". Give it to ourloved ones the time that they deserve, becauseit cannot be put off till "some other time."
