Chapter Three

I came back that afternoon to check on him. Dressed in his kasaya, he was seated in the lotus position with his back straight. His cheeks were rosy, his voice clear, and his expressions unreadable. Off erings symbolizing cleanliness such as dried fruits, fl owers, clear water, and white conch were placed on the square table in front of him. He gestured to the seat cushion beside him and said, “We are all just passing through this world. We cheer for life and grieve over death, often ignoring that the most important quality is actually compassion. We shall be charitable and merciful. I am going to give you a gift today, to chant the Mani sutra which I he recited countless times to give you strength.” According to Buddhist rituals, this is a great honor. When you lack spiritual cultivation yourself, the merit accumulated by others can be tranerred to you to plant the seeds of goodness in your heart.

Today, he was feeling better. So he performed this rare, grand, and sacred ritual, praying for all people, including me. He took out a warmfaced 33-centimeter tall Maitreya statue from the shrine and then took a vase, a bronze mirror, a vajra, and a tambourine from the leather case holding the ritual instruments, lining them up on the table covered with a yellow tablecloth. Off erings like incense, clear water, a lit oil lamp, and dried fruit were already laid there. Looking at me with compassion as well as a hint of relief and delight, he recited the prayers with dedication and respect. He looked solemn and focused, putting his hands together to pray for all sentient beings. When he held up the vase fi lled with water of wisdom and compassion, dipping a resplendent peacock feather in the water and scattering it in the sky, this cramped room seemed to be shrouded in exotic fragrance. I was fi lled with a sense of comfort, serenity, and happiness.

On my way back, I recalled our fi rst meeting after I had left home. It was 1976; the Cultural Revolution was about to end. I graduated from the Journali Department of Fudan University and had got a job at the newspaper Tibet Daily. One day, I received an unexpected call from the guard saying there was a beggar outside asking for me. I walked to the gate and saw a disheveled man carrying a dirty sack on his shoulder. His coat was so worn and darned in places that it was hard to tell its original color; his Tibetan boots were so worn that his toes were poking through. At fi rst sight, I took him for a vagrant. It was not until much later that I recognized him: my cousin whom I had not seen in sixteen years. No wonder the guard thought he was a beggar!
