Ultrasonic Detection-Life-saving Straw Avoiding the Collapse of Maior Buildings

We often hear the news of the suddenbreak of a bridge, or accidentalcollapse of a major building. Actually,many major accidents like these arecaused by some unrecognized lackof details. For example, a steel bridgein Minnesota, America, collapsed,and the accident happened in rushhour, during which plenty of carsand were trapped on the bridgehence many vehicles and the driversand passengers in them fell intothe Mississippi. The accident ledto hundreds of hurt and more than10 people lost their life. In the laterinvestigation, people found that atiny metal part within the bridge bodycouldn"t stand the weight hencecaused this tragedy. If we found thesecurity risk in advance, can"t thesedisasters be avoided? Fortunately,British researchers have already founda new method exploring metal cracks.
This method takes advantageof sound emission principle.Starting from researching the echo,engineers team of Bristol Universitysent hundreds of differentultrasonic waves into the objects,and explored and studied the echoreflected by them, hence discernedwhether there is tiny cracks withinthe objects. Using new nonlinearultrasonic detection methodand sending waves of the samefrequency, we can get reflectedwaves of different frequencies,which means we are able to "hear"the problems within the objectsgenuinely.
So far, this system has takenpartial tests on the airfoils of AirbusA320. The result showed that, wecan use this system to explore tinycracks forming around rivet holes,while linear ultrasonic detectionsystem is far from fulfilling thistask. This technique can not onlyhelp safety inspectors accuratelyestimate the degree of supportingmaterials in airplanes or bridges,which enable the inspectors tochange in advance before thesematerials go aging, but it can alsohelp people design planes andbridges of higher security degree.However, this system only explorecracks around rivet holes up tonow.
